Helping children grow independence, confidence and responsibility in everyday tasks at GEM.

I Can Do It – In ActionThe GEM Journal | Edition 1.1

In this edition of The GEM Journal, we are taking a closer look at I Can Do It, one of the 7 key elements that make up The Practical Preschool.

I Can Do It is now fully embedded in all GEM Early Learning Centres. It focuses on developing everyday independence, helping children build confidence through simple, repeatable tasks that become part of their daily routine.

You will see this in action through children serving their own food, packing away after play, dressing themselves, managing toileting, and generally learning to take responsibility for small tasks.

This is not just about ticking off jobs. It is about helping children feel capable, confident and prepared for the transition to primary school. These skills also show up at home, as children become more comfortable trying things independently.

Our characters Gabe, Ella and Milo continue to help bring these ideas to life for children. You will see them reflected in classroom language, visuals and learning prompts throughout the centre.

I Can Do It ties directly to key skills for school readiness, including:

  • Self-help and independence
  • Routine and responsibility
  • Focus and participation
  • Emotional regulation when trying new things or persisting through challenges
