The GEM Journal – Edition 1
5/6/25, 2:00 am

Welcome to the first edition of The GEM Journal. In this issue, we’re excited to share an inside look at The Practical Preschool — a hands-on learning program designed to build real-life skills that help children feel confident and ready for school.
Why Hands-On Learning?
Primary teachers often tell us the same thing: many children arrive at school bright and eager, but not yet confident with basic readiness skills — things like following instructions, sitting still for short periods, or managing their belongings.
At GEM, we believe children learn best by doing. Through real-world practice and repetition, kids grow their confidence, independence and creativity naturally. That’s why The Practical Preschool is all about hands-on experiences — never pressure, never worksheets.
What Skills Are We Focusing On?
Here’s what schools say they’d love to see more of in school-ready kids:
Following instructions
Playing cooperatively
Holding a pencil
Doing up buttons
Packing their own bag
Managing emotions
Taking turns and sitting calmly
The Practical Preschool builds these skills into daily routines and play, helping children develop them naturally, with gentle support.
How Can Families Support This?
When children practise the same skills both at home and in care, learning sticks.
Each time we introduce a new focus, we’ll share a simple action or phrase you can try at home — something easy to weave into your daily routine.
Small steps at home = big steps in confidence.
